VCU Takes Third Consecutive A-10 Title

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Top-seeded VCU (16-8) clinched its third consecutive Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship with a 4-0 win against third-seeded Massachusetts (17-5) on Sunday at Boar's Head Sports Club. 

VCU took the first point of the match at doubles with wins on courts one and three. Cindy Chala and Salome Kvitashvilli defeated UMass' top pair of Ana Yrazusta and Carol Benito, before Ludvine Burguiere and Olga Barshcheuskaya took an 8-6 decision against Chanel Glasper and Anna Woosley. UMass was leading, 7-4, on court two when the point was decided.

In singles, Chala struck first for the Rams with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2. VCU's Olga Barshcheuskaya followed with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Arielle Griffin, to give the Rams a 3-0 match lead. 

The Minutewomen netted first set wins on all remaining courts, including a first set tiebreaker, 7-6(4) behind Ana Yrazusta. With UM leading in second sets at No. 2, 5, and 6, the match was called when Glasper of UMass was forced to retire due to injury.

The Minutewomen's 17 wins this season are the most since 2005.
