Massachusetts Claims Eighth-Straight A-10 Championship
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The top-seeded Massachusetts Minutewomen earned their eighth-straight Atlantic 10 Lacrosse Championship crown with a 10-7 victory over No. 6 Richmond Spiders Sunday at Duquesne's Rooney Field.
After completing their sixth-straight perfect conference regular season, the Minutewomen's second half effort proved to be enough against the Spiders, earning an eighth consecutive championship title and the A-10's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
The Minutewomen got on the board early, as Eileen McDonald scored just 15 seconds into the game, followed by a second McDonald goal, assisted by Erika Eipp. Natalia Chaney would get one back for the Spiders, before McDonald completed her hat trick within the first five minutes of the game, putting UM on top, 3-1.
The Spiders would bring it within one on a goal from Hope D'Orsi, before McDonald again found the back of the net and keeping control of the lead, 4-2.
Richmond scored three straight times with goals from Kim Egizi, Mia Castagnero and Brooke Wilson to take their first lead of the game, 5-4.
Callie Santos would even the score at 5-5, which would hold until the halftime break.
The second half saw a scoring battle between UR's Wilson and UM's Santos, who each traded a pair of goals, with Santos' score knotting the game for the last time with 18:32 remaining at 7-7.
The Minutewomen would control the advantage for the remainder of the game, with goalie Aileen Kelly making seven saves in the second half alone to close out the Spiders, while Michaela Aymong registered seven stops on the day.
UM's Hannah Murphy was named Most Outstanding Player for her performance in the weekend's championship. Joining Murphy on the All-Championship team were teammates Eileen McDonald, Aileen Kelly, Callie Santos, and Erika Eipp; from Saint Joseph's Rebecca Lane and Genevieve Giblin, Duquesne's Tess Drotar, Davidson's Annie Brocket, and Richmond's Natalia Chaney, Brooke Wilson and Caroline Queally.
