Cosmai and Siopacha Claim Tennis Player of the Week Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. –   Fordham’s Tomas Cosmai was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week while George Washington’s Maria Siopacha was named the Women’s Player of the Week. Also honored was Fordham’s Fabian Mauritzson, who was named the Men’s Rookie of the Week and Rhode Island’s Mihaela Codreanu who was named the Women’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were based off performances from April 10-16.

 

Cosmai went 2-0 in his matches to help Fordham defeat Siena College on Senior Day. The senior from Franklin Lakes, N.J., defeated the Saints 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and then teamed with freshman Allen Thornes for a 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles.

 

Siopacha went undefeated to help the Colonials post a perfect weekend, notching road victories at Temple and A-10 foe Saint Joseph's. On Saturday, the sophomore helped the Colonials claim a crucial doubles point with a 7-6 (10-8) triumph over Temple in the No. 2 spot. In singles, Siopacha downed her foe in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 to help GW take a 4-3 win over the Owls. On Sunday, the Limassol, Cyprus native, again helped the Buff and Blue take the early point with her 6-3 win at No. 2. In singles action, again at No. 1, Siopacha took a dominant, 6-0, 6-2 triumph to help GW down Saint Joseph's, 6-1.

 

Mauritzson went 2-0 in his matches to help lead Fordham to a 6-1 victory over Siena College. The freshman from Bradenton, Fla., defeated the Saints 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and teamed with sophomore Victor Li for a 6-3 victory in first doubles.

 

Codreanu went 3-0 in singles play this week while not dropping a set at the No. 1 singles spot. The freshman began the week with a 7-5, 6-3 victory against Army West Point. Later in the week, Codreanu took a 6-2, 6-2 victory against La Salle, followed by a 6-1, 6-0 win at Saint Joseph's. In doubles play, the freshman and her courtmate Tiara Higuchi were 2-1 on the week in doubles. The duo lost at No. 2 doubles against Army, 6-2, but took home two wins in conference play at La Salle (6-1) and at Saint Joseph's (6-2). For the season, the Norristown, Pa., native, is 4-1 in #1 singles play versus A-10 opponents.
