The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team will embark on a 10-day tour of Italy from August 13 to 23, playing three games and touring the historic cities of Rome, Vatican City, Florence, Venice, Treviso and Como.
This summer marks the fourth time that head coach Cindy Griffin has taken Saint Joseph's overseas, as the Hawks also traveled to Italy in 2002, Spain in 2008 and Ireland in 2012.
Among the sites the Hawks will visit in Italy are The Colosseum, St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Accademia Gallery in Florence, the Grand Canal in Venice, and Lake Como.
In preparation for the tour, the Hawks are permitted to hold full-squad practices beginning on August 6.
The Hawks return 11 players, including starters Adashia Franklyn, Amanda Fioravanti and Alyssa Monaghan, along with Atlantic 10 Sixth Woman of the Year Chelsea Woods, from last year's squad which went 17-15 and earned a berth in the WNIT. Making the trip to Italy with the 11 letterwinners will be freshmen Katie Jekot, Lula Roig and Mary Sheehan.
Fans can follow the Hawks throughout the trip through social media as SJU will be active on Twitter (@SJUHawks_WBB), Instagram (SJUHawks_WBB), Facebook (SJUHawksWBB) and Snapchat (SJUHawks_WBB), as well as recaps and blog entries on SJUHawks.com.
