PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The La Salle women's soccer team (17-4-2) fell 3-1 at Rutgers (13-2-5) in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday evening at Yurcak Field.

Madison Bower cut into a 2-0 Rutgers lead midway through the second half, scoring her 11th goal of the season at the 64:29 mark on a cross from Kristin Haugstad. Bower redirected Haugstad's cross, which came from the edge of box, with her back heel past the dive of RU keeper Casey Murphy inside the far post.

Rutgers pushed the lead back to two goals when Brittany LaPlant scored in the 80th minute on assists from Amirah Ali and Taylor Aylmer. Danielle Marx had a shot blocked in the 86th minute but the Explorers weren't able to score again on the vaunted Rutgers defense.

The two teams were locked in a defensive battle in the first half before Rutgers got on the board on an Ali goal in the 52nd minute. RU wasted little time extending the lead to 2-0, with Alexa Ferreira scoring on a deflected shot in the 56th minute.

RU had allowed just five goals all season, and entered the match with a 0.25 goals-against average on the season. With Bower's goal in the 65th minute, the Explorers set a new program record for goals in a season with 48. With 17 wins, La Salle also tied the 2011 team for most wins in a season in program history.

The Scarlet Knights advance to the NCAA Tournament second round for a match with No. 7 West Virginia on Friday.
