Fisher, Kilstofte, Crawford Claim Tennis Weekly Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. –Dayton’s Carsten Fisher was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week while Dayton’s Mattea Kilstofte and Massachusetts’ Ruth Crawford were awarded the Women’s Tennis Co-Players of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday. Also honored was Max Green of Fordham, who was named the Men’s Rookie of the Week and Richmond’s Adrienne Haynes, who was named the Women’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were based off performances from April 2 – 8.


Fisher defeated two Big Ten opponents, both in straight sets, this weekend at No. 2 singles for a 2-0 record in singles play against Iowa and Nebraska. The senior from Hilton Head, S.C., teamed up with fellow senior Zach Berry to defeat the No. 81 ranked doubles tandem in the county with a 6-2 win over Nebraska’s Toby Boyer and Linus Erhart. Fisher opened the weekend with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Iowa’s Piotr Smietana at No. 2 singles and picked up another win at No. 2 singles on Sunday by a 7-5, 6-3 margin over Dylan Bednarczyck. He now owns a 14-2 record in singles matches and has won 11 straight. Fisher was also announced as a First Team Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar last Friday.

Kilstofte, a Santa Barbara, Calif., product, won her match in No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles against Eastern Michigan for an undefeated weekend. The junior teamed up with Marlys Bridgham for a decisive 6-2 victory in doubles play and took care of opponent Anna Veleva in straight sets by a score of 6-4. 7-5 in singles play.

Crawford helped Massachusetts improve to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in Atlantic 10 matches as she won at No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles without dropping a set in the team’s victory over Fordham on Sunday. The Atlanta, Ga., native, teamed with Ashley Avery at No. 1 doubles for a 6-3 victory over the top doubles pairing from Fordham, Estelle Wong and Whitney Weisberg. She followed with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Tatiana Grigoryan at No. 1 singles as Massachusetts won, 6-1, at Fordham.

Green went 2-0 in his matches to help lead Fordham to a 4-2 victory over conference foe Saint Joseph’s on Saturday. The freshman from West Hollywood, Calif., defeated Beekman Schaeffer 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Green also teamed with Allen Thornes to defeat the Hawks 6-3 at the No. 3 doubles position.

Haynes stepped up for the Spiders this weekend to help the team go 3-0 with a perfect 3-0 record in singles play. The freshman from Asheville, N.C., started the weekend with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Rhode Island’s Paige Alshon at No. 6 singles, and paired with Gaby Rosales with a 6-2 win on doubles court 2. On Saturday, Haynes defeated Elon’s Kirsten Ward 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 to clinch the match for the Spiders. She then posted a 6-3, 6-1 singles win on court 6 over UNCG’s Tayah Cross to complete the perfect weekend in singles action.
