Dayton Claims Top Seed in Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer Championship

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Dayton Flyers have claimed the top seed in the 2013 Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer Championship, which will be played at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium, Thurs. Nov. 7-Sun., Nov. 10.  The Flyers, who earned their 11th regular season title, look to win a fourth Atlantic 10 Championship in five years.

Dayton finished the regular season 7-1 in conference play with 21 points and 12-5-1 overall, suffering its only league loss to reigning A-10 Champion, La Salle, in the final weekend of the season. The Flyers will face eighth-seeded VCU at 5:00 pm on Thursday. The Rams, who play host to the Championship, finished 3-3-2 in conference play and 8-7-3 overall.

La Salle completed its regular season schedule with three conference victories to clinch the second seed, finishing 5-2-1 in the A-10, and 13-4-2 overall. The Explorers will face seventh-seeded George Washington at 11:00 am on Thursday, to open the Championship. The Colonials needed a win on the final day of the regular season to claim a spot in eight-team field, finishing 3-3-2 against conference foes, and 7-5-5 overall.

Saint Louis picked up the third seed in this year’s championship, finishing with 16 points with a 5-2-1 mark in the A-10, 6-10-2 overall. The Billikens tied for second place with the Explorers, but lost the tiebreaker. Saint Louis will face off against sixth-seeded Massachusetts in the 1:30 pm match on Thursday. The Minutewomen punched their ticket with a win over St. Bonaventure in their final game of the season. UMass also finished 3-3-2 in league play, winning the tiebreaker against George Washington and VCU.

Clinching the fourth seed in the Championship is St. Bonaventure, who rattled off four consecutive conference wins to finish with a 4-4-0 mark in the A-10. The Bonnies will face A-10 newcomer and fifth-seeded George Mason, in the 7:30 pm game on Thursday. The Patriots finished their first season in the league with a 4-4-0 record, and 7-10-1 overall.

The winner of the La Salle-George Washington game will play the winner of the Saint Louis-Massachusetts match, Friday at 5:00 pm. The winner of the Dayton-VCU game will face the winner of the St. Bonaventure-George Mason game in the semifinals, Friday at 7:30 pm. The Championship game will be played Sunday at 1:00 pm. The championship format, featuring an eight-team bracket, is single elimination, with the winner earning the A-10’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
