UMass Earns Top-Seed in 2013 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship

NEWPORT NEWS, VA --  Fueled by a perfect 7-0 Conference record, the Minutewomen of Massachusetts have earned the top-seed in the 2013 Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Championship which will take play November 8-9 at UMass’ Garber Field.

The University of Richmond earned the second seed with a 6-1 A-10 record, with its only loss coming at the hands of Massachusetts in a shootout. Lock Haven and VCU each finished with 4-3 league marks.  LHU will be seeded third by virtue of its 3-0 victory over the Rams on October 25th.

The reigning A-10 Champion Minutewomen have outscored their opponents 40-9 in seven A-10 matches and finish the regular season undefeated in  conference play for third time since 2008 and the 10th time overall.

No. 12 UMass features Brooke Sabia whose 19 goals and 39 points are both tops in the A-10.  Alexa Sikalis’ 18 assists ranks first in the league, while Sam Carlino has posted a 1.80 goals against average between the pipes in 2013.

Richmond will enter the Championship with an overall record of 13-6. The Spiders’ Rebecca Barry is tied for second in the A-10 with 36 points on 15 goals and six assists. UR goalkeeper Anna Zarkoski has posted six shutouts on the season and leads the A-10 with a 1.07 goals against average.

Lock Haven finished the regular season 14-6 and are led by Nakira Downes who has 11 goals and 13 assists for 35 points which ranks fourth in the A-10. LHU keeper Elaina White has an A-10 best seven shutouts and fashions a 1.63 gaa.

VCU will arrive in Amherst with a 10-9 overall record. The Rams Emilie Soares has paced the offense with 14 goals and 8 assists for 36 points which is tied for second-best in the A-10.  Kendell Combs has dished out 11 assists on the season which is tied for third best in the league.

The Championships will begin on Friday, November 8 when Richmond and Lock Haven square off at 11:00 a.m., while UMass and VCU will compete in the second semifinal at 2:00 p.m.  The two winners will advance to the finals on Saturday, November 9, at 2:00 p.m.
