Saint Joseph's Wins Second Straight Field Hockey Regular Season Title, Will Be Championship Top Seed

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Saint Joseph’s field hockey won its second straight Atlantic 10 Conference regular season title and will be the top seed for the upcoming A-10 Field Hockey Championship, which begins Friday and concludes Saturday at the Gladchuk Sports Complex on the campus of the University of Massachusetts.


The Hawks, ranked 17th in the most recent coaches’ poll, enter this year’s four-team single-elimination tournament with an 16-3 overall record, having won the regular season with a 7-1 A-10 mark.


There was a three-way tie for second place among host Massachusetts, Richmond and VCU with a 6-2 Atlantic 10 record. Two-time defending champion UMass will be seeded second by virtue of a head-to-head tiebreaker among all three tied teams. The Minutewomen who have a 12-7 overall record this season, defeated both Richmond and VCU during the regular season.


VCU is 13-5 overall this season and will be seeded third, sporting a 1-1 record among the tied teams, with a win over Richmond and a loss to UMass. The Rams will play the Minutewomen in Friday’s second semifinal at 2:00 pm, with the winner advancing to Saturday’s championship final.


Fourth-seeded Richmond will play Saint Joseph’s in the first semifinal on Friday at 11:00 am. The Spiders are seeded fourth via the three-team tiebreaker and have an overall mark of 8-10.


The winner of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship will advance to the NCAA Tournament.
