First-Year Davidson Claims Top Seed for Menís Basketball Championship

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Davidson, in its first year in the Atlantic 10 Conference, has won the regular season and claimed the top seed for the 2015 Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Championship. The 14-team tournament begins Wednesday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. with the championship final set for Sunday, March 15.

All five days of the championship will be televised. The A-10 Network will air Wednesday’s first round games while NBCSN will carry the entire second round and all four quarterfinal matchups. CBS Sports Network will air the semifinals Saturday at 1:30 and 4:00 pm. The championship final is set for 1:00 pm on CBS Sports as part of their annual Selection Sunday coverage.

The Wildcats finished the season at 23-6, had an A-10 regular season record of 14-4 to claim the No. 1 seed outright and claim one of four byes into the quarterfinals. Dayton (23-7, 13-5 A-10) will be the second seed by virtue of a head-to-head tiebreaker with No. 3 Rhode Island (21-8, 13-5). Both receive a bye into the quarterfinals as does No. 4 Richmond (19-12, 12-6), which won a head-to-head tiebreaker with city rival VCU.

The championship opens Wednesday at 6:30 with a first round matchup between No. 12 Fordham and No. 13 George Mason. Fordham (9-20, 4-14) earned the head-to-head tiebreaker over Mason (9-21, 4-14). No. 11 Duquesne and No. 14 Saint Louis play in the second first-round game. The Dukes (11-18, 6-12)  and Billikens (11-20, 3-15) play Wednesday night at 9:00 pm.

VCU is the fifth seed with a 22-9 overall record and a 12-6 conference mark. The Rams open play in Thursday’s second round against the Fordham-George Mason winner at 2:30 pm. The winner of that second round matchup advances to face No. 4 Richmond.

George Washington (20-11, 10-8) is the No. 6 seed by virtue of a three-way tiebreaker with No. 7 St. Bonaventure (17-12, 10-8) and No. 8 Massachusetts (17-14, 10-8). The Colonials open play Thursday at 9:00 pm against the Duquesne-Saint Louis winner. The winner of that 9:00 pm game will face No. 3 Rhode Island.

The Bonnies will play No. 10 Saint Joseph’s Thursday at 6:30 pm with the winner gets No. 2 Dayton at 6:30 pm Friday. UMass opens Thursday at noon against No. 9 La Salle with the winner playing No. 1 Davidson at noon Friday.
