NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Richmond's Rebecca Barry and Massachusetts' Noralie Weusthuis were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league office Monday for games played Oct. 22-28.
Barry, a sophomore midfielder, earned Player of the Week honors after tallying a total of nine points over the weekend against A-10 opponents La Salle and Lock Haven. The Limerick, Ireland, native scored two goals late into the game on Friday (Oct. 26) as Richmond came from behind to defeat Lock Haven 3-2. Barry then assisted on a play and posted two additional goals four minutes into the second half on Sunday (Oct. 28) to give the Spiders a 3-1 win against La Salle. Richmond led the conference in wins (15-4/7-0), taking the No. 1 seed in the 2012 A-10 Field Hockey Championship.
Weusthuis earned Rookie of the Week after helping the Minutewomen to a pair of victories against Temple (4-1) and Lock Haven (4-0) this past weekend. The Hengelo, The Netherlands, native posted a total of six points, notching one goal against Temple, and later scored two goals against Lock Haven, including the game-winning goal. Massachusetts enters the A-10 tournament as the No. 2 seed after finishing up the regular season (12-8/6-1).
The 2012 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship gets underway this Friday, Nov. 2, with Richmond taking on VCU at 11:00 am, while the Massachusetts-Temple semifinal will begin at 2:00 pm. The finals of the 2012 A-10 Championship will take place on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 2:00 pm.
