Oct. 22, 2012

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Massachusetts’ Nicole Cordero and Sam Carlino were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league office Monday for games played Oct. 15-21.

Cordero, a senior forward, earned Player of the Week accolades after posting eight points this past week against A-10 opponents, La Salle (Oct. 19) and Saint Joseph’s (Oct. 21). The Oak Hill, Ill., native scored two goals against the Explorers, and two days later scored one goal and one assist against the Hawks. UMass finished the week 2-0, defeating La Salle, 4-1 and Saint Joseph’s, 5-1. The Minutewomen have won their last five games, four of which were against conference opponents.

Carlino earned Rookie of the Week honors after helping the Minutewomen to a pair of victories as the starting goalkeeper, only allowing one goal apiece against opponents, La Salle and Saint Joseph’s. The Lafayette, Pa., native tied her career high of eight saves which was set back on Oct. 6 against Richmond.
