NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – VCU sophomore defender Dennis Castillo has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week, while Dayton forward James Haupt was tabbed as the league’s Rookie of the Week for matches played from Sept. 9 – Sept. 15.

Castillo was named the University of Akron Tournament Offensive MVP over the weekend after helping the Rams pick up wins over No. 7 and the host Zips and 2012 NCAA Tournament participant Niagara.  A San Jose, Costa Rica native, Castillo also anchored a backline that posted a pair of shutouts in the tournament as well. VCU handed Akron just its second home loss in more than five years on Friday when a Castillo strike in the 75th minute propelled the Rams to the 1-0 decision. Castillo would then set up Karlton Belmar’s game-winner in the 51st minute in 1-0 win over the Purple Eagles.

Haupt scored the title clinching goal for Dayton Sunday in a 1-0 win over Detroit as the Flyers won a share of the Missouri State Tournament title. The Canton, Ohio native smashed home a pass from Greg Enstone in the 75th minute to put Dayton ahead. That would be all the Flyers would need to pick up the win, the tournament championship, and their fifth win of the season.
