Frazier, Burgess Earn Men's Basketball Weekly Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—Fordham senior Branden Frazier has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Week  and VCU freshman Jordan Burgess earned the league’s Rookie of the Week award. Both awards were announced Monday for games played Dec. 9-15.

Frazier averaged 21 points in leading Fordham to a pair of wins last week. He dropped a 27-point performance on Colgate on the road, hitting 50 percent from the field 40 percent from 3-point range and 90 percent at the free throw line. The guard from Brooklyn, N.Y., also pulled down five rebounds and grabbed three steals. He scored 15 points in a home win over Howard, again hitting 50 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from beyond the arc. Frazier had six rebounds and six assists in the win. He was 14-28 (50.0) from the field for the week while averaging 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.

Burgess was the freshman star for the Rams Saturday, tallying 18 points in a road loss for VCU. The guard from Midlothian, Va., earned his first career start and shot 7-of 13 (53.8 percent) from the field, including 4-of-6 (66.7 percent) from 3-point range. He scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half to help VCU rally from a halftime deficit to tie the score. He also grabbed four rebounds for the Rams.

 

Atlantic 10 Weekly Honor Roll

Dyshawn Pierre was 5-of-6 from the field and 3-of-4 from the line to score 15 points in Dayton’s win over Central Michigan … UD freshman Kyle Davis played a limited role versus CMU, but recorded three assists and no turnovers in just 10 minutes of action  … Duquesne junior Dominique McKoy averaged a double-double for the Dukes, tallying 12 points and 10 rebounds versus Penn State and 16 points and 10 rebounds against Robert Morris … La Salle junior Jerrell Wright had his second straight 20-point performance for the Explorers, including hitting 7-fo-10 from the field … Cady Lalanne led UMass to another win, scoring 17 points and five rebounds versus Northern Illinois to keep the Minutemen perfect ... UMass freshman Clyde Santee played just six minutes against NIU, but scored 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting after not recording a single stat in three minutes played in the first eight UM games … Richmond’s Kendall Anthony scored 18 points on six field goals, four of which were 3-pointers in a win over Coppin State … Andell Cumberbatch led St. Bonaventure to a key road win at Iona, with 25 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
