Newport News, Va. – La Salle’s Maddy Tettelbach has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Player of the week, while Massachusetts’ freshman Melanie Kreusch was named A-10 Rookie of the Week for games played from Sept. 29 – Oct. 5.
A native of Fairfax Station, Va., Tettelbach scored both goals in the second half to propel La Salle to a comeback upset win over Richmond on Sunday. The pair of strikes from Tettelbach helped the Explorers beat the Spiders for the first time since Oct. 20, 2001. It marked the senior’s first multi-goal game of the season. A team captain, Tettelbaach has anchored the midfield and been a strong defensive presence as well, limiting opponents this weekend to 1.00 GAA and 1.40 GAA on the season.
Kreusch recorded eight points on four goals as the Minutewomen won games over Lock Haven, 3-0 and Saint Francis, 3-2 on Friday and Sunday, respectively. After she scored once against Lock Haven, Kreusch provided a trio of goals for her first collegiate hat trick when the Minutewomen came from behind for the win over SFU, which entered the game as the final unbeaten team in the nation. Kreusch scored her first against the Red Flash to erase a 1-0 deficit and snap a streak of 254 consecutive scoreless minutes earned by the Saint Francis defense spanning five games. She followed 10 minutes later with her second of the game to make it 2-1 UMass. The freshman from Belgium added her third goal, the game-winner, in the final minute of play and only three minutes after Saint Francis evened the score at 2-2.
