First Atlantic 10 Cross Country Weekly Honors Announced

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Davidson’s Ryan Phillips has been named the first Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Cross Country Performer of the Week for the 2015 season. Dayton’s Emily Leonard and La Salle’s Morgan Szekely were named the Women’s Cross Country Co-Performers of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday. Also honored were Saint Joseph’s Shawn Hutchison, who was named the Men’s Rookie of the Week, and Lindsey Oremus, who was named the Women’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were based off performances from meets September 4-6.

Phillips, a senior from Ridgewood, N.J., raced to a first-place finish at this past weekend’s Spider Alumni Invitational in Mechanicsville, Va., with a time of 15:05.9 (5K). Phillips was one of three Davidson runners to record top five finishes as the Wildcats earned a first-place team finish besting A-10 opponents Richmond, George Mason and VCU.

Leonard, a sophomore from Park Ridge, Ill., recorded a personal best time of 18:01.6 (5K) en route to a first-place individual finish at the Rich Davis Flyer 5K Challenge. Leonard finished ahead of competitors from regionally ranked opponents, Ohio, Ohio State and Miami (OH). Leonard led the Flyers to a third-place team finish.

Szekely, a sophomore from Marion, Texas, finished first in a field of 60 runners at the Lehigh Invitational with a time of 21:44.5 (6K). Szekely’s time was 1:00.9 faster than the next closest competitor.

Hutchison, a freshman from Blackwood, N.J., finished second in a field of 44 runners to lead the Saint Joseph’s men’s squad to a second-place team finish at the TCNJ Blue/Gold Invitational. Hutchison recorded a time of 15:27 (5K) and finished just seven seconds behind the first-place finisher.

Oremus, a freshman from Wyoming, Pa., finished second overall in her collegiate debut with a time of 18:33 (5K) as the Hawks finished first overall at the meet.
