NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - La Salle's Fia Jonsson and Saint Joseph's Emily Gingrich have been named Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Soccer Co-Players of the Week, while Explorer teammate, Marcela Robinson has earned Rookie of the Week Honors. All awards are for games played Sept. 7 - Sept 13.
Jonsson tallied six points in two Explorer wins last week, providing a spark off of the bench, as La Salle defeated Navy and regionally-ranked James Madison. Against Navy, the senior from Nykoping, Sweden, assisted the game-winner before adding an insurance goal in a 2-0 victory. The midfielder then assisted on Marykate Bateman's equalizer against the Dukes, before converting a penalty kick in the 49th minute to give the Explorers a 2-1 edge that would hold through the second half.
Gingrich had a hand in all four of the Hawks' goals last weekend, recording six points in a win and a loss. The junior tallied the first goal of the match against Seton Hall, then assisted on the game-winner in a 2-1 victory. The Shillington, Pa., native again scored the first goal of the match against Lehigh and assisted on SJU's second goal as they fell short, 3-2. Gingrich leads the Hawks with four goals and two assists.
Robinson, a defensive midfielder, anchored a defense that allowed just one goal in two wins last week for the Explorers. The rookie from Owing Mills, Md., and the Explorers shutout Navy, a team who had scored six goals in their last outing, then held James Madison to just one score and three shots on goal, snapping a four-game winning streak.
