NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Rhode Island junior Billy Walthouse and St. Bonaventure senior Josh Stauffer have been selected as the Atlantic 10 Conference Co-Golfers of the Week, while Rhode Island freshman Dawson Jones was tabbed the A-10 Rookie of the Week. Both awards are for tournaments played Oct. 2-6.
Walthouse was Rhode Island's top finisher, tying for third place overall at the Binghamton Fall Invitational. He carded back-to-back 71s to end the 36-hole tournament with a two-under 142. A native of Longmeadow, Mass., he has finished even or under in all four events this fall. Walthouse, last week’s A-10 Golfer of the Week, posted his second top-five finish this year and eighth of his career. His performance helped lead Rhode Island to its second consecutive second-place finish.
Stauffer earned medalist honors at the Little Three Championship, taking his second career individual victory after shooting 73-75-148 under rainy conditions on Wednesday in Grand Island, N.Y. The Bradford, Pa., native earned a ticket to the 2016 Porter Cup next summer at Niagara Falls Country Club with his win, carding four birdies in his first round and five in the second round. He then tied Walthouse for third in field of 85 golfers at the Binghamton Fall Invitational with eight birdies on the weekend, shooting even-par 72 in round one and then a two-under 70 in Monday's final round. Stauffer has a scoring average of 71.3 over his last three tournaments, where he has finished in top three each time.
Jones, from Howell, N.J., carded a first-round 73 before closing out the Binghamton Fall Invitational with a 76 to finish five over at 149. The freshman helped the Rams in second place for the second straight week. He has now finished in the top-20 in three of his first four career events this fall.
