NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Davidson junior Jack Gibbs was named the Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week Monday, while Dayton freshman Steve McElvene was selected as Rookie of the Week. The awards are for games played Nov. 30 – Dec. 6.
With former Davidson standout Steph Curry in attendance, Gibbs began his week with a career-high 41-point performance in Davidson's rout of Charlotte. After making his first 14 shots from the floor, he finished 14-of-17 overall and 6-of-7 from behind the arc. Dating back to 1979, Gibbs and Curry are the only Wildcats to score 40 or more in a contest. It was the most points scored by an Atlantic 10 student-athlete since St. Bonaventure’s Andrew Nicholson scored 44 in Dec. of 2010 and it ties for the fourth-highest total in Division I this year. A guard from Westerville, Ohio, Gibbs capped his week with a 19-point effort in Davidson's setback at ninth-ranked North Carolina. Gibbs finished the week averaging 30.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals, while shooting 56.8 percent (21-37) from the floor, 50.0 percent (9-18) from 3-point range and 81.8 percent (9-11) at the charity stripe. It’s Gibbs’ second Player of the Week award this season.
McElvene had his second double-double of his young career with 14 points and 16 rebounds in Dayton’s win over North Florida. He also blocked four shots and had two assists while turning in a nearly perfect shooting performance, making seven of eight field goals. His 16 rebounds were the most by a Dayton player in almost five years. A center from New Haven, Ind., McElvene’s points, rebounds, blocks and assists were all college bests.
