Hess, Cash, Hughes Earn Weekly Softball Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Dayton senior Kathryn Hess its Softball Player of the Week and Dayton sophomore Manda Cash its Pitcher of the Week. Fordham’s Jessica Hughes earned Rookie of the Week honors. The awards were for games played Feb. 15-21.

Hess went 6-for-14 (.429) at the plate and hit three home runs, including two in the Flyers’ win over IPFW. Her third home run of the weekend, a two-run blast against Detroit, sparked a four-run inning en route to an 8-0 win. The East Hampton, N.Y., native also had five RBI and four runs scored.

Cash tossed 14.2 innings over four games at the Chattanooga Spring Invitational. In the season opener against Chattanooga, she allowed only one unearned run on three hits in seven innings while striking out 10. She picked up the win against IPFW while striking out four batters, and tossed two innings against Detroit, striking out two.

Hughes hit .429 (6-for-14) over the weekend with an on-base percentage of .529. She also recorded two stolen bases and two runs scored. She recorded base hits in three of the five games and was 4-for-4 at the plate against Tennessee.
