Sidwell, Stafford Share A-10 Baseball Player of the Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Davidson’s Jake Sidwell and Saint Joseph’s Deon Stafford, Jr., both catchers, were named Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Co-Players of the Week Monday while Fordham’s Kirk Haynes, Jr. earned Pitcher of the Week honors for the second consecutive week. Saint Louis freshman pitcher Miller Hogan was named the league’s Rookie of the Week. The three awards are for games played March 21-27.

Sidwell led the Wildcats to a 4-1 week, sweeping Iona College and winning the opening A-10 series against UMass. The junior from Windermere, Fla., went 7-for-11 with six RBI for a .636 batting average and a .727 slugging percentage. He helped the Wildcats to a 16-1 victory over Iona on Tuesday with a 2-for-3 performance, including a double, with two RBI and two runs scored. He then picked up three hits with two RBI on Friday to lead Davidson to a 10-2 win over UMass, before going 2-for-4 in the come-from-behind victory on Saturday.

Stafford set a new Saint Joseph’s record with a three-home run game on Saturday. The sophomore from Harrisburg, Pa., hit safely in all four games this week, including a 2-for-4 performance with a home run in Thursday’s Atlantic 10 opening victory at Richmond. On Saturday, Stafford became the first Hawk to ever hit three home runs in the same game, hitting a pair of two-run home runs to bring SJU back from a 4-0 first-inning deficit. His solo shot in the top of the ninth then provided the margin of victory in Saint Joseph’s 6-5 series-clinching win. He reached base in over half his plate appearances and posted a 1.738 OPS.

Haynes continued his stellar pitching on Saturday against NJIT. He threw his first career complete game shutout in a 2-0 victory. He scattered three hits and a walk in the contest and tied a career-high with nine strikeouts. Over his last four appearances, Haynes is now 2-0 with a 0.39 ERA, allowing one run on nine hits over 23 innings of work with 23 strikeouts to just four walks. A junior from Linthicum, Md., Hayes was selected as Co-Pitcher of the Week last week.

Hogan threw 5.2 innings against Dayton on Saturday, leading the Billikens to a 7-2 win over the Flyers. Hogan had three hits allowed and only one earned run. An Overland Park, Kan., native, he struck out five and walked three.
