Rygelski, Wolf, Emmenecker, Fairchild & Horsmon Claim Annual Atlantic 10 Volleyball Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Saint Louis senior Danielle Rygelski, Dayton sophomore Margo Wolf and junior Jane Emmenecker, Fordham freshman Olivia Fairchild and Dayton head coach Tim Horsmon earned the Atlantic 10 Conference’s top volleyball awards.

The Atlantic 10 announced the five awards along with the All-Conference, All-Rookie and All-Academic teams Thursday prior to the 2016 A-10 Volleyball Championship that begins Friday at Chaifetz Pavilion in St. Louis, Mo. The major awards, All-Conference Teams and All-Rookie Team were voted on by the A-10’s head volleyball coaches. The All-Academic team was selected by the volleyball media relations directors.

Rygelski, an outside hitter from St. Charles, Mo., was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year following a season in which she was named A-10 Player of the Week seven times and led the nation in kills per set (5.97) and points per set (6.70). She also leads the conference in attacks per set (13.76), ranks second in aces (50) and is hitting .305 in A-10 matches with 6.65 kills per set and 0.73 aces per set.

Wolf, a sophomore from Cincinnati, Ohio, earned A-10 Libero of the Year honors after finishing the season first in the A-10 in overall digs per set averaging 5.12, and second in the A-10 in with 4.88 digs per set in league play. She was also named the A-10 Defensive Player of the Week on four occasions this season.

A junior from Perrysburg, Ohio, Emmenecker was named A-10 Setter of the Year for the third consecutive season. She ranked first in the A-10 in assists per set, averaging 11.1.  She also led an offense that ranked first in overall and conference-only hitting percentage and finished first in overall and conference-only kills per set.  

Fairchild, a freshman outside hitter from Phoenix, Ariz., was named A-10 Rookie of the Year after setting several Fordham school records this season including kills per set (4.30) along with kills in a three-set and four-set match. She also finished the season ranked fourth in kills in a single season (477).  She is ranked second in the conference in kills and service aces. On the season, Fairchild earned A-10 Rookie of the Week honors four times and once was named Co-Player of the Week.

Horsmon won his third straight Coach of the Year award after leading Dayton to its third consecutive A-10 regular season title and a perfect 14-0 record to earn the championship’s top seed.

The 2016 Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship begins Friday with two matches between No. 3 Saint Louis and No. 6 Davidson in the first quarterfinal and No. 4 Duquesne and No. 5 VCU in the second quarterfinal. No. 1 Dayton and No. 2 Rhode Island will face the two winners in Saturday’s semifinals. The championship final will be played Sunday at 2:30 pm ET. The opening round will be streamed on the A-10 Network while the semifinals and final will air live on American Sports Network (ASN).
