NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Davidson senior Brian Fortier was selected as the Atlantic 10 Baseball Player of the Week and Saint Louis sophomore Miller Hogan was named the A-10 Pitcher of the Week. Additionally, Dayton freshman Tate Hagan was chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The three awards were announced Monday and are for games played Feb. 20-26.
Fortier played a key role in giving Davidson the lead in each of their three weekend wins. He registered eight hits, six runs, and nine RBI, including four long balls. The four homers, the first of which came midweek against High Point, matched the combined total from his first three seasons at Davidson. A first baseman from Holly Springs, N.C., he had his first career multi-homer game and a career-best six RBI off two three-run bombs in Friday’s come-from-behind victory over UMass Lowell. He was 2-for-4 with a solo homer Saturday in a win over Lehigh. Fortier also placed a single into shallow right, to set up the eventual tying run against Fairleigh Dickinson Sunday. He recorded a monster 1.167 slugging percentage and went .500 in on-base percentage.
SLU's ace hurled a gem against host-school Santa Clara in the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament. Hogan threw six scoreless innings, striking out three and allowing a mere five hits (all singles). The Overland Park, Kan., native picked up the win, his second of the season. This season, Hogan has struck out 11 in 11 innings pitched while holding hitters to a .200 batting average.
Hagan provided an offensive spark for Dayton over the weekend, going 5-for-11 at the plate with two homers and a double. The Tallahassee, Fla., native scored three runs against USC Upstate and drove in one, and then came back against Georgetown to lead the offensive with two homers in a 3-for-4 game, all while hitting cleanup for the Flyers. The home runs were the second and third on the season for Hagan. The rookie also played a stellar first base, handling all 17 attempts on the weekend without committing an error.
