Jones, Cline Earn Top Weekly Baseball Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Davidson junior Eric Jones was chosen as the Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Dayton junior Austin Cline was selected as Pitcher of the Week.  Fordham freshman Nick Labella was named the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards, announced Monday, are for games played March 12-18.

 

Jones helped lead Davidson to a perfect 5-0 week, including the ‘Cats second win over an opponent receiving votes in the national polls. A utility man from Charlotte, Jones hit for .450, tallying nine hits and driving in 13 runs. He scored six times and struck out just once in 23 plate appearances. Jones had multi-hit affairs in each of the 'Cats three weekend games, and he recorded multiple RBI in each of the five games, tallying three each on three separate occasions. Jones recorded a .500 on-base percentage and a .900 slugging percentage. He had a pair of home runs, and registered his first career triple. With his 13 RBI this week, Jones now leads the nation in runs batted in.

 

Cline, a righty from East Liberty, Ohio, threw a complete game shutout in Dayton's 3-0 victory over Ball State on Saturday. He allowed just three hits and walked just two batters across his nine innings on the mound, while also striking out nine Ball State batters. The win was the first of the season for Cline, who is one of three captains for the Flyers this season.

 

Labella hit safely in all four games this week, extending his hit streak to five games. A utility player from Mesa, Ariz., he hit .375 with two RBI and three doubles for the Rams. Labella had his first career three-hit game on Wednesday against Wagner, going 3-for-5 with two RBI. He also had a double in all three games against Cornell, while adding two walks in the series finale.
