Fordham Chosen to win #A10MSOC Title

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Fordham has been selected as the Atlantic 10 Conference preseason men’s soccer favorite in a vote conducted by the league’s 13 head coaches. The league announced the annual Preseason Poll and Pre-season All-Conference Team Tuesday ahead of the start of the season Friday.

Fordham earned 159 points and six first-place votes to take the top spot in the rankings after being nationally ranked No. 16 on the United Soccer Coaches (USC) Preseason Top-25 poll.

VCU ranked second on the list with 149 points and four first-place votes followed by Massachusetts with 144 points and two first-place votes to round out the top three spots.

Fordham enters 2018 after setting new standards for the program last season. Fordham finished the year with a school record 14 wins including two wins over nationally ranked opponents. The Rams recorded their first two NCAA tournament wins, and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals eventually falling in the elite eight against North Carolina. The team ended the year ranked 11th in the final USC Top 25 Poll, while being seventh in the Top Drawer Soccer Top 25.

Fordham returns five postseason award winners, led by seniors Janos Loebe and Rashid Nuhu, who are joined by teammate Joergen Oland on the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Team. Loebe was also named to the 2018 MAC Herman Trophy Watch List this season.

VCU is led by All-Conference squad member Siad Haji after advancing to the Atlantic 10 championship game for the third year in a row last year and earning its third at-large bid and second top-16 seed in the NCAA tournament in the last six years.

Massachusetts advanced to the NCAA tournament last season for the first time since the 2008 season after winning the A-10 Championship. The Minutemen went 10-1-1 on their home field during the regular season.

Massachusetts returns six starters this season, including sophomore Davis Smith, who joined Fordham’s Loebe on the MAC Herman Trophy Watch List, and senior Konrad Gorich, who were both named to the Atlantic-10 Men’s Soccer Preseason All-Conference team.

Rhode Island was picked to finish fourth with 124 points, followed by Rhode Dayton with 117 votes. Saint Louis was picked sixth with 106 points, and George Washington was seventh with 102 points. Davidson, George Mason, and La Salle round out the top ten, while St. Bonaventure, Saint Joseph’s and Duquesne finish out the poll.

The 2018 A-10 men’s soccer season kicks off on Friday. The top eight teams will compete in the 2018 Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Championship, with the opening rounds held on the campus of the higher seeds on November 4. The top four teams will then advance to play at Robert Hermann Stadium on the campus of Saint Louis in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 9. The championship finale will be held on Sunday, Nov. 11 with the winner earning the A-10’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
