NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Massachusetts senior DeAndrae Brown and VCU sophomore Mario Sequeira claimed the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week awards, respectively, the league announced Monday. Rhode Island’s Edvin Akselsen and Davidson’s Lucas Hauth were named Co-Rookies of the Week. All three awards are for games played from Oct 8-14.
Brown, a forward from Springfield, Mass., scored two goals on the week as Massachusetts split two games away from home. He scored a goal on Wednesday against Rhode Island to give him his seventh of the year and added his team-leading eighth goal in a 1-0 shutout win at Fordham, sending a rebound shot into the top shelf of the goal in the 54th minute to rank him second in the A-10 in goals for the season.
Sequeira, a goalkeeper from San Jose, Costa Rica, recorded eight saves on a total of 27 shots faced this week. He helped keep a clean sheet, his eighth of the season, against Saint Louis with six saves despite being outshot 24-4. Sequeira also had two saves in a 2-1 victory over George Washington on Saturday. This is Sequeira’s third A-10 Defensive Player of the Week award this season.
Hauth, a forward from Fleming Island, Fla., scored a pair of goals and assisted on another in the Wildcats’ 6-2 win over Saint Joseph’s. In addition to scoring his first two collegiate goals and the eventual game-winner, he helped Davidson remain unbeaten in conference play this season.
Akselsen, a Midfielder/Forward from Oslo, Norway, had five points in a 2-0 week for Rhode Island. He helped the team overcome an early two-goal deficit in Wednesday’s win over Massachusetts, setting up the game-winner in the 35th minute. On Saturday against Dayton, after the Flyers tied the game 1-1 in the 75th minute, he headed what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 79:02 mark and added an insurance goal with just 44 seconds remaining in regulation.
