MERION STATION, Pa.— Saint Joseph’s and VCU earned the top Atlantic 10 Conference end-of-year field hockey awards, which were announced Thursday ahead of the 2018 A-10 Championship, which will be played at Ellen Ryan Field on the SJU campus.
VCU’s Emily McNamara was named Offensive Player of the Year, while Saint Joseph’s Victoria Kammerinke earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. Freshman Tonya Botherway of Saint Joseph’s was named Rookie of the Year, while Hawks’ coach Lynn Farquhar was tabbed A-10 Coach of the Year for the third straight season.
Also announced were the All-Conference First and Second Teams, the All-Academic Team and the All-Rookie Team.
McNamara leads the nation in goals per game (1.47), and is second nationally in points per game (3.12). The senior forward from Centreville, Va., native also led the league in points with 53 and in goals with 25. She also tallied 99 shots, 63 of which were on goal, both of which led the conference in scoring. Her efforts led VCU to its best A-10 record ever and a pair of wins over ranked teams (#11 Old Dominion, #14 Wake Forest).
Kammerinke, a junior goalkeeper from Kaarst, Germany, ranked fifth in goals against average this year nationally, and third nationally in goalie win-loss percentage. Her goals against average of 1.00 led the A-10. She played every minute of every game in cage for the Hawks this season and posted a league-high nine shutouts.
Botherway finished second in the A-10 in points with 50, just behind McNamara, and was third in goals with 20. The freshman forward from Auckland, New Zealand was fourth nationally in points per game and seventh in goals per game.
Farquhar led the Hawks to their third straight A-10 regular season title with a perfect 8-0 league mark. The Hawks, currently ranked 10th in the nation, surpassed 15 total wins for the third straight season, again tying a school with record with 16 wins this year. The Alexandria, Va., native led SJU to a pair of wins over ranked teams (#9 Delaware, #14 Syracuse) this season.
The 2018 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship begins Friday at Ellen Ryan Field. The semifinals will be played Friday, with face off of the first game at 11:00 am and the second game beginning at 2:00 pm. The championship final is Saturday at 2:00 pm.
