NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Davidson junior Jon Axel Gudmundsson its Player of the Week and Dayton freshman Obi Toppin the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards, which are presented by Enterprise, were announced Monday and are for games played Feb. 18-24.
Highlighted by Davidson’s first triple-double in 46 years, Gudmundsson finished the week averaging 23.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 7.5 assists. Despite a last-second setback to Dayton, Gudmundsson scored a game-high 26 points to go along with eight rebounds and five assists. The guard from Grindavik, Iceland, capped his week with the Wildcats’ first triple-double since 1973, recording 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in Davidson’s win at Rhode Island. In addition, Gudmundsson hit the 500-rebound and 400-assist milestones during the week, making him the first player in school history with 1,000 career points, 500 rebounds and 400 assists.
Toppin had double-doubles in both Dayton wins last week. He had 18 points and 12 rebounds in the win at Davidson and 11 points with 10 rebounds in the Saint Louis win. He scored four of Dayton's last five points in the one-point win at Davidson, draining both free throws with 2:41 left and putting back his own miss with 34 seconds to go. A forward from Ossining, N.Y., Toppin also had seven assists (three at Davidson, four versus Saint Louis) with just two turnovers this week. He averaged 14.5 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists for the week and tied the Dayton single-season dunk record (66) in the Saint Louis game.

Dayton’s Josh Cunningham didn’t miss a field goal last week in helping Dayton win a pair of key games, going 6-for-6 for 21 points at Davidson and 5-for-5 for 13 points versus Saint Louis … Duquesne’s Tavian Dunn-Martin scored 22 points, including a 5-for-7 performance from behind the arc to lead the Dukes 19-point comeback win over George Mason … Jeff Dowtin averaged 13.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists over two games for Rhode Island, shooting .526 from the field and .571 from 3-point range … Grant Golden led Richmond to a 2-0 week, scoring 16 points with six rebounds and three assists versus Fordham, and then tallying 24 points on 10-of-12 shooting with nine rebounds and six assists at La Salle … St. Bonaventure freshman Osun Osunniyi was a force in the paint, with13 rebounds and five blocks versus La Salle and 11 rebounds and two blocks at Fordham, while 11 of his 24 total rebounds on the week being of the offensive variety … Tramaine Isabell, Jr. had 23 points on 10-of-13 (.556) shooting with seven assists for Saint Louis against Dayton … Marcus Evans had a dominant performance for VCU in a win over George Washington, scoring 25 points on 6-of-10 (.600) shooting with two assists, while earlier in the week he dished out nine assists with nine points in VCU’s win over Rhody.
