Botherway Named #A10FH Offensive Player of the Week, Bentz Earns Defensive Player of the Week Honors
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Saint Joseph’s sophomore Tonya Botherway was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week, while her senior teammate, Kathrin Bentz, was awarded Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. La Salle freshman Hannah Yanovich earned Rookie of the Week honors. The awards are for games played Aug. 30 - Sept. 1.
The reigning A-10 Rookie of the Year, Botherway, picked up right where she left off, scoring the first two goals of the game en route to a hat trick as the Hawks routed Hofstra, 9-1, in their opening game. After staking the Hawks to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, Botherway, a native of Aukland New Zealand, converted a penalty stroke two and a half minutes into the third to lock up her second career hat trick.
Bentz, a back from Hamburg, Germany, tallied a goal and an assist in the 17th-ranked Hawks' 9-1 rout of Hofstra on Sunday. She spearheaded a Hawk defense that did not allow a shot from open play, as the lone Hofstra attempt came on a penalty stroke.
Yanovich, a forward, began her La Salle career with an impressive debut, scoring a goal and registering an assist in a 3-0 victory over Sacred Heart. In the sixth minute of her first collegiate game, Yanovich notched the game-winner off a feed from Lauren Lechleitner. Later in the first half, the Dallas, Pa., product inserted a penalty corner to earn an assist on the goal by freshman Noralie Pareau Dumont.
