Dayton Tops Rhode Island, 2-1, to Earn Spot in Sunday's Final
FAIRFAX, Va. - The second-seeded Dayton Flyers scored two unanswered goals to defeat sixth-seeded Rhode Island, 2-1, in Friday's Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer semifinals at George Mason Stadium.
In a rematch of their final game of the season, the Flyers will take on VCU in Sunday's Championship finale, which will air live on American Sports Network at noon ET. The Rams won that contest, 3-2, in overtime to earn a bid in the Championship.
Rhode Island struck first as Dominik Richter dribbled the ball from midfield, nearly colliding with a Dayton defender, before spinning and getting a shot off. Keeper Oliver Hansen got a hand on it, deflecting it off of the post, but URI's Mike Casey was there to put the rebound away. It was Casey's third goal of the season.
With less than a minute left to play in the first half, the top offense in the country broke through near the top of the box, with Michael Frasca and Amass Amankona completing a perfect give and go pass before Amankona snuck a shot passed a diving Nils Leifhelm.
In the 80th minute, Dayton's Kissima Bojang took a feed from Michael Frasca and nailed it into the lower left corner of the net. The goal was Bojang's fourth of the season, and the eventual gamewinner as Dayton's 2-1 lead would hold.
Leifhelm made six stops for the Rams, while Hansen registered four saves in the win for the Flyers.
With Friday's win over the Rams, Flyer head coach Dennis Currier now has 300 career head coaching wins.
