Saint Louis Advances to the A-10 Title Game Following a Thrilling Five-Set Win

ST. LOUIS — Third-seeded Saint Louis defeated second-seeded Rhode Island in a five-set thriller (25-20, 23-25, 25-17, 20-25, 15-11) in the Atlantic 10 Volleyball semifinals Saturday night at Chaifetz Pavilion.

The Billikens (18-13) advance to Sunday’s championship final to play for the A-10 automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Saint Louis will face the winner of Saturday’s second semifinal Sunday at 2:30 pm ET/1:30 pm CT. The A-10 championship game will air live on American Sports Network (ASN) nationwide.  

In what was a back-and-forth match, featuring 34 ties and 17 lead changes, both teams alternated set wins with the Billikens taking the first set and the third set while Rhode Island won sets two and four. In the decisive fifth set, SLU pulled out the victory, 15-11.

Saint Louis’ Danielle Rygelski, the A-10 Player of the Year, hit .264 and recorded 25 kills and 11 digs to lead the Billikens to their second title game appearance.  Mackenzie Long also had 14 digs for the Billikens, who are in pursuit of their first conference title since 2008.

Rhode Island’s Audrey Castro had 19 kills, six digs and four blocks for the Rams. With the loss, Rhode Island, falls to 17-10 on the season.
