Dayton Pulls Out a 3-2 Victory to Advance to Sunday’s A-10 Championship Game
ST. LOUIS — Top-seeded Dayton overcame a 2-1 deficit to pull out the victory, 3-2 (25-12, 20-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-10), over fifth-seeded VCU in the Atlantic 10 Championship Semifinals Saturday night at Chaifetz Pavilion in St. Louis, Mo.
The Flyers (29-1) advance to Sunday’s championship final to play for the A-10 automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Dayton will face #3 Saint Louis (18-13) Sunday at 2:30 pm ET/1:30 pm CT. The A-10 championship game will air live on American Sports Network (ASN) nationwide.
In the second five-set match of the evening, Dayton won the first set 25-12. VCU then won the next two sets, taking a 2-1 advantage into the fourth set. Dayton jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set and pulled away to win the set. In the fifth and final set, a key 5-0 run lifted the Flyers to victory.
Dayton’s Jessica Sloan led the Flyers with a double-double of 15 kills and 10 digs. Also recording double-digit kills for the Flyers were Kendyll Brown, Lauren Bruns and Amber Erhahon. Dayton setter Jane Emmenecker recorded 52 assists along with 11 digs to lead the Flyers.
VCU’s Alicia Kandler and Vicky Giommarini both recorded 12 kills for the Rams. Tyler Sroufe and Dajah Ard recorded 21 and 20 assists, respectively. With the loss, VCU, falls to 19-14 on the season.
