Dayton Wins 11th A-10 Volleyball Championship in a Five-Set Win Over Saint Louis
ST. LOUIS — Dayton won its third straight Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship Sunday in thrilling fashion, defeating Saint Louis, 3-2 (21-25, 25-20, 23-25,25-20, 15-9 ) in the championship final at Chaifetz Pavilion.
The top-seeded Flyers, winners of 19 straight matches, claimed their 11th A-10 title and seventh in the last eight years in the rematch of last year’s title game. Dayton will receive the Atlantic 10’s automatic bid to the NCAA Volleyball Tournament. The NCAA Selection show will be held on Sunday, November 27 at 9:00 pm ET on ESPNU.
The first set was a back and forth affair that included 11 ties and five lead changes. Saint Louis won the first set after a furious finish in which they scored eight of the final nine points in the set sparked by a flurry of kills by Nenye Okoro.
Set two was close throughout, but with the score tied at 18, Dayton recorded seven of the last nine points including three consecutive kills by All-Championship Selection Amber Erhahon to win the set.
The Billikens took the third set of the match following seven kills in the stanza by A-10 Player of the Year, Danielle Rygelski.
Rygleski, who was named to the A-10 All-Championship team along with teammates Mackenzie Long and Taylor Paulson, recorded a new career-high in kills with 35 for the match and had 88 kills over all three days of the championship.
Down 2-1 entering the fourth set, Dayton responded with a win in the fourth set as Jessica Sloan and Erhahon recorded four and five kills in the set, respectively.
Dayton’s Erhahon was named the Championship’s Most Outstanding Player following her 14 kill, seven block performance in which she hit .542. As a team, the Flyers hit .342 and recorded 13 blocks.
Also honored as members of the All-Championship team were Dayton setter Jane Emmenecker along with teammates Kendyll Brown and Sloan.
