Fifth-Seeded Saint Louis Wins Pitchers' Duel to Survive Elimination

ST. LOUIS — No. 5 Saint Louis staved off elimination, winning a Wednesday night pitchers' duel, 3-1, over No. 3 St. Bonaventure in the first round of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship at Billiken Sports Center.

The Billikens (33-21) advance in the consolation bracket and will play Thursday at 5:00 pm against the loser of the morning contest between Davidson and George Mason. The Bonnies were eliminated from the championship and finishes their season at 26-22.

SLU starter Devin Mahoney (6-0) went 8 1/3, allowing just one run on seven hits with five strikeouts to claim the victory. Ryan Lefner picked up his 12th save on the season, throwing 2/3 of an inning with no hits.

The game's first run came in the second inning when Nick Reeser singled down the right field line, scoring Alex King. That was the only score by either team until the bottom of the seventh, when Aaron Case gave SLU insurance with a two-run home run to left field.

The Bonnies put together a ninth-inning rally, breaking the shutout with a run by David Vaccaro on a bases-loaded Ryan MacCarrick groundout. A fly out to right field ended the game.

SLU's Trent Leimkuehler was 2-for-4 to lead the Billikens at the plate, while Tommy LaCongo and Taishi Terashima each went 2-for-2 to lead SBU.

Brandon Schlimm (1-4) went 7 1/3 and collected nine strikeouts, while allowing three runs on seven hits in taking the loss.
