Acosta Leads Davidson to Semifinals
ST. LOUIS — Alec Acosta hit his second home run of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship, and had four RBI to lift No. 6 Davidson to a 6-3 win over No. 7 George Mason Thursday at Billiken Sports Center. The win also ties Davidson's single-season program wins record of 29.
The Wildcats (29-23) advance to the semifinals and will face the winner between No. 1 VCU and No. 4 George Washington Friday at noon. Mason (26-32) falls into the consolation bracket and will play No. 5 Saint Louis in an elimination game Thursday afternoon.
In addition to the school wins record, closer Westin Whitmire set the Davidson record for saves in a season with 12.
Acosta, a junior who entered the championship with one career home run, hit his second in two days, a shot to left field in the fourth that drove in Will Robertson and Max Bazin and negated a two-run homer by Mason's Trevor Kelly in the top of the inning. Kelly's dinger broke a one-all tie and plated Logan Driscoll.
Davidson added a pair of insurance runs late, one each in the seventh and eighth innings. Justin Lebek hit an RBI single that scored Eric Jones in the seventh, and Acosta singled through the left side in the eighth to score Cam Johnson.
Both teams tallied a second inning run, with Mason scoring on a Tyler Nelin triple that pushed Kelly home, and the ‘Cats crossed home thanks to a Brett Centracchio single that plated Lebek.
Kelly was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Driscoll was 2-for-3 to lead the Patriots.
Evan Roberts (3-1) went 7 2/3 innings allowing three runs on five hits with eight strikeouts to earn the win. Whitmire threw a hitless ninth for the record-breaking save. Zach Mort (3-7) took the loss, surrendering seven hits and four runs while striking out seven batters.
