Top-Seeded VCU Wins Offensive Battle Over GW to Advance to A-10 Baseball Semifinals
ST. LOUIS —Top-seeded VCU scored nine runs on 14 hits to defeat No. 4 George Washington 9-4 and advance to the 2017 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship semifinals Thursday afternoon at Billiken Sports Center.
The Rams (34-20) advance to Friday's semifinals to face No. 6 Davidson at noon on American Sports Network. GW (31-26) falls into the consolation bracket and will play No. 2 Rhode Island Thursday night.
Mitchel Lacey was a perfect 4-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored and sparked the Rams offense with a two-run blast in the sixth that broke a three-all tie. He followed that with an RBI double to center in the seventh that scored three VCU runs. In all, the Rams tallied six runs in the seventh to establish a six-run cushion.
The Colonial offense was hot too, with four runs on 13 hits. Five GW players collected two hits each, and the two teams left a combined 13 runners on base (13 for GW, 10 for VCU). Bobby Campbell did score a late run for the Colonials on a Robby Metz groundout, but the single score in the ninth was not enough.
Brooks Vial (9-3) went six innings, allowing nine hits and three runs with three strikeouts for the win. Jonathan Ebersole earned his second save of the season with a four-hit, one-run performance in three innings pitched.
Eddie Muhl (2-3) took the loss for George Washington, allowing seven runs on 10 hits.
