Ninth-Inning Rally Lifts Billikens Past Mason
ST. LOUIS —No. 5 Saint Louis scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to rally past No. 7 George Mason 9-6 in the second round of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship Thursday at Billiken Sports Center.
The Billikens trailed 6-5 entering the final frame, but scored four runs, starting with Aaron Case's solo home run led off the inning and tied the game. Carter Hanford's RBI single then drove in Cole Dubet and Alex King's double down the left field line scored James Morisano and Nick Reeser's sac fly scored Hanford. SLU then shut down Mason in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory.
Saint Louis (34-21) will play at 3:30 pm Friday in a semifinal elimination game Friday 3:30 pm against either Rhode Island or George Washington. The Patriots closed their season at 26-33.
Josh Garner (1-1) got the win for the Billikens, throwing 5 1/3 innings of relief, allowing just two hits and no runs with seven strikeouts. Ryan Lefner earned his 13th save, setting Saint Louis' single season saves record. Lefner put up zeros, pitching just the ninth inning.
Case was 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead SLU, while Morisano, King and Reeser each had two hits. Mason scattered its eight hits among eight players.
