Seventh Inning Mahoney Homer Lifts Billikens Past Rhody
ST. LOUIS — No. 5 Saint Louis got a seventh-inning home run from Devin Mahoney to beat No. 2 Rhode Island 4-2 Friday afternoon and Billiken Sports Complex. SLU advanced to the consolation final to face No. 6 Davidson Friday night, with the winner moving to Saturday's final.
Mahoney's shot scored Carter Hanford and broke a two-all tie. It was the second homer of the game for the Billikens (35-21), who also scored on a first-inning, two-run James Morisano shot to left.
Rhody's first run came in the third on a Jordan Powell single to the left that scored Mike Foley, and then the Rams tied it on a moonshot by Chris Hess to left field. Powell and Kevin Heiss each had two hits to lead Rhody (31-21).
Morisano and Cole Dubet each had a pair of hits for the Billikens, witch Morisano collecting two RBI and a run scored.
SLU's Aaron Pattion (6-2) got the win, working seven innings with five hits, two runs and five strikeouts. Ryan Lefner extended his school-record single season saves total to 14, equaling the league season high. Cam LaFleur (1-4) took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings pitched.
