AMHERST, Mass. - No. 1 seed Massachusetts (13-3-3) defeated No. 8 seed Saint Louis (7-9-1), 1-0, Sunday at Rudd Field in a quarterfinal matchup of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship, held Sunday at Massachusetts' Rudd Field.
Massachusetts advances to the semifinals, where they'll face No. 5 seed Fordham next Friday night at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio at 4:30 pm.
Connor O'Dwyer provided the lone goal of the afternoon to put the Minutemen ahead of Saint Louis in the 31stminute off a corner kick from Alex DeSantis. DeSantis sent his corner kick into the box to O'Dwyer, who headed it into the far post for his second goal of the season.
The best chance for Saint Louis came early in the contest as Moussa Diarra fired a shot at the net that hit the crossbar and bounced out of bounds for a UMass goal kick. Anthony Brown and Patrick Wilkinson attempted two shots apiece while Quayyum Murana and Leo Novaes put the two shots on net for the Billikens.
Bardia Asefnia had three saves for the Minutemen on 12 shots faced while Billiken goalkeeper Sascha Otte picked up one save on nine UMass attempts.
