No. 8 Richmond Records First-Round Victory Against No. 9 Davidson to Advance to A-10 Quarterfinals
RICHMOND, Va. – Led by senior Micalea Parson, the No. 8 seed Richmond Spiders took advantage of a quick start to defeat No. 9 Davidson, 62-53, in the First Round of the 2018 Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship at Robins Center.
The Spiders (14-16) will face No. 1 seed Dayton in the quarterfinals on Friday at 11:00 am. That game along with the three other quarterfinal matchups will be streamed live on the A-10 Network. The quarterfinals, semifinals and championship final will all be played in Richmond, Va. at the Richmond Coliseum for the fifth consecutive season.
Richmond took an early lead, jumping out to a 21-8 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. Micaela Parson led all scorers with 30 points on 10-of-17 (.588) shooting from the field to go with seven rebounds and four assists. Freshman Alex Parson contributed 11 points of her own along with five rebounds and three steals.
With a strong start to the fourth quarter, Davidson was able to shrink the deficit to five points, 46-41, with just over five minutes to play following back-to-back baskets from Ally Welling. The Spiders responded with a 3-pointer from Alex Parson and a jumper from Micaela Parson to push lead back to 10 points and were able to close out the win.
Davidson (12-18) was led by Mackenzie Latt with 22 points and was joined by Justine Lyon and Katie Turner in double-figures.
