PHILADELPHIA – Behind a game-high 33 points from Chelsea Woods, sixth-seeded Saint Joseph’s defeated 11th-seeded VCU, 63-72, in the First Round of the 2018 Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship on Tuesday at Michael J. Hagan ’85 Arena.

Woods shot 12-of-16 (.750) from the field, while corralling seven rebounds, six which were on the defensive end. Saint Joseph’s shot 22-of-45 (.489) from the field compared to VCU’s 19-of-51 (.373). Sarah Veilleux (14) and Alyssa Monaghan (12) each scored in double figures for the Hawks.
The game was close through halftime, with Saint Joseph’s and VCU tied at 13-13 at the end of the first quarter and 31-23 at the intermission. Entering the fourth quarter down 45-41, that’s the closest VCU would get to the Hawks.
After a Woods layup and Veilleux 3-pointer, the Hawks surged out to a 10 point lead, less than two minutes into the quarter. Robinson brought the Rams back to within six points midway through the fourth, but Saint Joseph’s quickly expanded their lead to 10 after a pair of Veilleux and Monaghan free throws.
