Offense Propels Patriots to First-Round Win over George Washington

ARLINGTON, Va.— Trevor Kelly and Michael Smith each had three hits to lead Second-seeded George Mason to an 11-3 win over No. 7 George Washington in the first round of the 2018 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship Wednesday at Tucker Field.


The Patriots (27-25) advance to face third-seeded Fordham Thursday at 10:00 am. George Washington (29-25) falls into the consolation bracket and will play No. 6 VCU in an elimination game Wednesday night.


Kelly was 3-for-5 with a solo home run and Smith was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Greg Popatak also hit a homer for the Patriots, who scored in five different innings, including three in the first and four in the fifth. Frank Sturek had three RBI, Brady Acker had two and Alejandro Aponte had one for the Colonials.


Zach Mort (6-3) picked up the victory for Mason, throwing seven innings with six hits, three runs two walks and four strikeouts. Isaiah Pasteur (2-1) took the loss, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts and five walks.


Matt Cosentino was 2-for-4 at the plate to lead GW, which scatted hits among six other batters. Sam Martin, Robbie Metz, and Trevor Kunci each had an RBI for the Colonials.
