Davidson Homers Lift Fifth-Seeded 'Cats to Win over No. 4 Richmond
ARLINGTON, Va.— Brett Centracchio and Justin Lebek hit a pair of two-run home runs to propel fifth-seeded Davidson to a 6-2 upset win over No. 4 Richmond Wednesday in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship at Tucker Field.
Davidson (33-19) advances to face No. 1 Saint Louis at 1:30 pm Thursday, while Richmond falls into the consolation bracket and will play Thursday at 8:30 pm in an elimination game against either No. 6 VCU or No. 7 George Washington.
Centracchio hit his dinger in the fourth inning to break open a scoreless battle. Lebek then doubled the Davidson lead with a two-run blast in to left in the sixth. Eric Jones was the beneficiary of both blasts, scoring on each homer.
Davidson got a complete game from Evan Roberts (7-6), who allowed two runs on nine hits and struck out six. Richmond starter Robbie Baker (9-2) took the loss, throwing 5 2/3 innings, surrendering four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
Richmond (31-23) got two of the runs back in the bottom of the sixth, starting with a Justin Cook RBI single that scored Kyle Schmidt. Anthony Forte then hit into a fielder’s choice, driving home Daniel Brumbaugh.
Davidson plated a pair of insurance runs, one each in the seventh and eighth innings. A Lebek single scored Jones in the seventh and a Cam Johnson single drove in Max Bazin in the eighth.
