RICHMOND, Va. – Dayton hung onto a 5-4 quarterfinal win over host VCU to advance to the 2013 Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer Championship semifinals and will face the winner of the St. Bonaventure-George Mason match Friday at 7:30 pm.
VCU got on the board early with a goal in the eighth minute off the foot of senior Courtney Conrad on a through ball from sophomore Natalie Moik. Dayton then rattled off four consecutive goals to take a 4-1 lead into intermission, including two from Offensive Player of the Year, Ashley Campbell. Nicole Waters and Haley Keller also found the back of the net for the Flyers in the first frame.
Campbell added her 17th goal of the season to complete the hat trick, giving the Flyers a 5-1 lead early into the second half, assisted by Juliana Libertin. With two assists on the day, Libertin ties the Dayton single-season assist record (15, Colleen Williams).
The VCU Rams mounted a comeback on their home field, starting with a goal from junior Maren Johansen, cutting the lead to three.
Just under three minutes later, Casey Boyer put a shot past All-Rookie goalkeeper, Elizabeth James to bring the Rams within two.
The teams continued to battle for possession for the next ten minutes until senior Jessie Krasko sent a cross through to Olivia Defelice for the Rams' fourth goal of the game, and the sophomore’s first of the year.
With three goals and an assist, Campbell’s seven points broke the A-10 Championship single-game record, previously set by former Flyer, Colleen Williams.
The Flyers will face the winner of the St. Bonaventure-George Mason game in the semifinals at 7:30 on Friday at Sports Backers Stadium.
