DAYTON, Ohio – Devon Fisher’s goal in the 86th minute lifted third-seeded VCU to 2-1 victory over sixth-seeded Duquesne in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Championship.
The Rams improve to 11-6-2 overall and will face second-seeded George Mason in Friday’s first semifinal at 5:00 p.m. The Dukes end their season with 9-8-1 record.
Thomas De Villardi got Duquesne on the board just 3:48 into the match when he took a pass from Chris Alescio and beat VCU keeper Andrew Wells.
The Rams got the equalizer in the 16th minute when Garrett Harvey took a pass from Richie Duffie just inside the penalty area and scored to tie the match at 1-1.
The score would stay that way until Romena Bowie fed Fisher who beat the Duquesne keeper and sent VCU to the semifinals.
VCU outshot Duquesne 14-11 and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. Sam Frymier made five saves for the Dukes, while Wells made a pair of saves for VCU.
