PHILADELPHIA, Pa.--Butler University won the 2012 Atlantic 10 Men's Cross Country Championship Saturday with 38 points and an average time of 26:00.7. Temple senior Travis Mahoney was the individual winner with a time of 25:16.5. The 8K race was run at the Belmont Plateau.

The Bulldog men followed in the footsteps of the BU women's cross country team, which also won an A-10 title, the school's first league championship. Saint Joseph's finished second with an average time of 26:27.82 and 121 points.

"[Winning] means a lot, this was my goal. I came back for a fifth year," Mahoney said. "There are always so many good guys in our conference and I knew it was going to be tough and I had to put it together on the home course -- It meant a lot to me."

Butler coach Matt Roe won Coach of the Year honors and Bulldog freshman Erik Peterson was named Most Outstanding Rookie as the top freshman finisher (eighth place).

"We were running really conservatively, we ran as a team - we wanted to work together and get a win on a very difficult course," Roe said. "We executed and knew what we needed to do."

La Salle, last year's champion finished third with 122 points and an average time of 26:16.52. The Explorers were paced by second-place finisher senior Alfredo Santana. Santana, who clocked in at 25:21.9, was the individual winner last year.

Temple finished fourth, spurred by Mahoney's win. The Owls scored 127 points and had an average time of 26:20.32. Duquesne had an average time of 26:36.74 to place fifth with 153 points and Dayton was sixth with 176 and an average time 26:38.30.
