Fordham Heads to A-10 Semis With a 45-41 Win Over Duquesne

Richmond, Va. Third-seeded Fordham advanced to the Semifinals of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship with a 45-41 victory over sixth-seeded Duquesne on Friday evening in Richmond, Va.

Fordham improves to 23-7 and advances to Saturday’s second semifinal where it will face second seeded St. Bonaventure at 1:30 p.m. Duquesne concludes the season with 19 wins and 12 losses.

The Rams were led by Emily Tapio and Abigail Corning who both had 12 points in the win. Erin Rooney and Samantha Clark each had strong contributions as well, scoring 10 and nine points respectively. Clark grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and Tapio snared 10 boards to help Fordham to a 44-33 edge on the glass.

Duquesne got a game-high 19 points from Wumi Agunbiade to go along with her team-best nine rebounds. The Dukes shot 30.8 percent from the floor, making 16-of-52 attempts, including just 1-of-11 from beyond the three-point line.

Fordham built an early nine point second-half advantage when Corning sunk a three-pointer to make the score 34-25 with 13:06 to play in the game.

With Fordham leading 40-33, Duquesne scored seven consecutive points, tying the game at 40 after a Reagan Moore three-pointer with 2:10 to go in the contest.

Rooney connected on a pair of free-throws on the next trip down the court for Fordham to make the score 42-40 with under two minutes to play.

After Agunbiade made one of two free-throws on Duquesne’s ensuing possession, Clark put the game away with a bucket with 45 seconds left to make the score 44-41. The final point of the game came from a Tapio free throw with two seconds remaining to clinch the 4-point victory for Fordham.
