Top Seed Dayton Rallies Past VCU in A-10 Quarterfinals

Richmond, Va. – Celeste Edwards’ go-ahead layup with six seconds remaining lifted top-seed Dayton to a 62-61vicory over eighth-seeded VCU in the Quarterfinal Round of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship Friday afternoon in Richmond, Va.

Trailing 60-56 two minutes left, Cassie Sant of Dayton (22-6) scored a bucket to pull the Flyers within within two with 1:31 remaining.

After a defensive stop, Ally Mallot tied the contest with a jumper with 1:05 left to play.

After a trading possessions, VCU had the ball with time winding down.  Dayton’s Amber Deane forced a turnover and Edwards was able to collect the ball and score on the opposite end of the court to give UD a 62-60 lead.

VCU (22-9) drew a foul after inbounding the ball and Keira Robinson went to the line with a chance to tie the game with three seconds remaining.  Robinson converted the first attempt to pull the Rams within one. 

Following a Dayton timeout, Robinson was unable to make her second attempt and the ball was rebounded by Dayton as time ran out.

Dayton trailed by as many as 18 with under 10 minutes to go in the first-half and VCU would hold a 36-24 lead at the break.

An Adaeze Alaeze bucket with 10:19 gave VCU a 50-43 edge with 10:19 to play. 

UD would score 19 of the  final 30  points to cap the rally and advance to take on the winner of George Washington and Saint Joseph’s tomorrow at 1:30 pm.

Malott led Dayton with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Andrea Hoover had 15 points and Edwards finished with 15.

Robyn Parks matched Malott with 19 points and pulled down a game-best 16 rebounds. Robinson and Isis Thorpe each finished with 10 points for the Rams.
