MASON POSTGAME | UMASS POSTGAME

RICHMOND, VA – George Mason’s Taylor Brown scored 35 points in leading the 12th seeded Patriots to a come from behind victory over 13th seeded Massachusetts, 85-75, in overtime of the Opening Round of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship on Wednesday evening.

Mason improves to 8-22 on the season and advances to a Thursday First Round matchup against fifth-seeded and reigning A-10 Champion Saint Joseph’s at 2:30 p.m. Massachusetts finishes its season with a 4-27 record.

Brown’s 35 points falls just one point shy of the A-10 Championship record of 36 points set by Xavier’s Tara Boothe in 2006.   Brown was joined in double-digits by teammates Janna Pickard (18 pts.), Kyana Jacobs (14 pts.) and Talisha Watts (10 pts.)  Sandra Ngoie grabbed 11 rebounds, while Jacobs snared 10 for a double-double.

UMass was led by Jasmine Harris who had 26 points. Rashida Timbilla had 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Nola Henry had 13 points.

The Minutewomen jumped out to a 15-0 lead when Harris converted a three-pointer just under three minutes into the contest.

After a Kim Pierre-Louis bucket made it 31-13 in favor of UMass with under 10 minutes to play, Mason rallied, closing the opening stanza with a 28-10 run to pull even at the half at 41-41.

UMass scored 16 of the first 24 second half points with a Henry lay up making the score 58-49 with 12:20 to play.

Mason responded with a 17-6 run, taking a 65-64 lead on a Jacobs layup with 1:48 to play in the game.

With the Patriots leading by one point with 17 seconds left, UMass’ Emily Mital knocked down a three-pointer to put the Minutewomen out in front 69-67.

Jacobs was fouled on Mason’s ensuing possession and converted a pair of free-throws to tie the game with seven seconds left.

In overtime, Mason was able to outscore UMass 16-6 to take the victory and advance to Thursday.
