MASON, Ohio—The fourth-seeded Richmond women’s tennis team won its first match of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women’s Tennis Championship, 4-0 over No. 13 La Salle Thursday morning at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
The Spiders (9-12) won the doubles point when Brittany Boys and Katya Salas defeated Madison Gillen and Ceclie Johnson at No. 2 doubles. UR had already claimed No. 3 doubles by default.
Richmond then won at No. 4 singles when Melissa Kandinata defeated Gillen, 6-0, 6-0. A default at No. 6 singles and a 6-0, 6-0 win by Salas over Johnson clinched the 4-0 win for the Spiders.
UR advances to face No. 5 Massachusetts, winners over No. 12 Dayton, on Friday at 10:00 am.
